Seeing Ólafsson hails from Iceland I figured such a book might work well for Rose City Reader’s European Reading Challenge. The other day at the public library recently I stumbled across a copy of his 2017 novel One Station Away. Once again I’ve opted to deviate from my originally designated 20 Books of Summer. Last week I featured David Gilmour’s 2011 The Pursuit of Italy: A History of a Land, its Regions and their Peoples and the week before that it was Adam Hochschild’s 2016 Spain in Our Hearts: Americans in the Spanish Civil War, 1936–1939. This week it’s Icelandic author Ólafur Ólafsson’s 2019 novel The Sacrament. He liked to let his thoughts drift to distant places, where there was no sadness and the nights were filled with pleasant dreams. While they were knitting he had allowed his mind to wander.
